Rick Hornback's familiar street/strip '69 Chevelle received a sizable power boost this past winter with the building of a beast of a new engine. He started with the same block he'd been using as a 427 and added an Eagle 4" stroke crank for 460 cubes now. That crank swings Eagle H beam rods and Diamond custom pistons special ordered to fit the GM Performance Parts aluminum heads' chambers. The block was decked and align-honed and ARP main studs installed. The rotating assembly was balanced. Compression ratio is in the "racing gas only" range. A solid roller cam with over .700 lift and "a lot" of duration was installed. An Edelbrock Victor Jr intake and huge Holley carb top it off with an NOS nitrous system added for good measure. His '69 was already set up for racing and has a Lenco planetary 4 speed tranmission. It has a clutch for launch but shifts like an automatic. His racing this year has been limited but he's already seen 11.0's on motor only and low 10's with a small nitrous shot. Rick feels the current clutch setup is hurting his launches and he plans to correct that this winter. He's also stepped up the nitrous shot but hasn't been able to try it yet. Low 10's and maybe a dip into the 9's is the target for next year. Pictures below and next page.
