Walter Turpin's love of cars started when he was only 6 months old. He would help his Dad build model kits. He was always helping his Dad and Grandfather with the family cars. His Grandfather was a new car salesman in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. When Walter was 11 years old his Grandfather let him drive a '74 Corvette in the dealer lot.
Walter is 44 years old and was born and raised in Indy. He now lives on the north side of Indy. He graduated from North Central High School (driving a '64 Chevelle SS at the time), then attended Lincoln Technical Institute. At that time he worked at Indianapolis Star-News. He currently works for Indiana Wesleyan University as a Facilities Assistant. He also works at the Artist Vineyard in Noblesville as a dishwasher on weekends.
Walter's hobbies and interests include working on his baby, a'72 Chevelle Malibu, volunteering at East 91st St Christian Church, and volunteering with the Indy 500 Festival Parade. He participates in HSCA and Indiana Freedom Cruisers. He likes to watch NASCAR (a "Junior" fan), and cheers on the Colts and Indians. He also helps out with the family dog Fifi. Walter and his '72 Chevelle have been in the Star a couple of times.
Some of Walter's favorite cars that he has owned or have been in his family include: '63 Pontiac Tempest convertible, '66 Chevy Impala convertible, '69 Camaro, '58 Impala, and '63 Impala. His favorite of all cars is a silver '63 split window Corvette.
Walter's Father also reminisces about some cars in Walter's life:
The first unique car Walter was involved with was a '57 Cadillac Eldorado convertible when he was 5 in 1968.He would ride around sitting on the center front armrest. Then they moved to Florida and had a '67 Olds Delmont 88 with a 425 V8. They rode in that car to visit Walter's Grandparents in Indy before moving back to Indy in '74. While in Florida Walter's Father was a member of the Model A Restorer's Club and owned a '40 Dodge 4 door. Walter had a toy Structo dump truck he "drove" around

until he busted the rear axle. I worked at a tool and die shop at the time and put a new axle in the truck. Walter also had a red '63 Corvette. He could sit on it and steer as he pushed with his feet. While in Florida we had a lot of vehicles. At one time we had 10 cars. 9 of them ran and I drove a different one every day. The Model A Club was taking part in a promotional show for a shopping center and Walter helped me primer our '55 Chevy convertible for the show. I had a bookcase with model cars in it. Walter was 2 or 3 years old and I could not keep him from playing with them. I put a plastic sheet on the front for protection. The case is still with us, complete with models and plastic cover.
